Give a little love.

I really like this commercial.

There were six of us in total.

Six, myself included. Five of us were hospital staff, and then there was David, a friend.  We had all known her for a little over a month, ever since her arrival at the shelter. She was estranged from her family and had lost contact with them years ago. No one knew their whereabouts and she never spoke of them. She had been in and out of shelters for the past 10 years - first, in various women shelters and, after the sex change, she came to us. We feared that she would be raped in a mens only shelter, but we took her in anyway.

She was 46.

I'm telling you about her, about Kim, because I don't think a lot of people knew about Kim. She was flamboyant, unique and really, she was quite a character. She demanded to have her medications, she demanded to see the doctor, she demanded to have new bedsheets.  Somedays, she would forget that she already took her meds, that she had already seen the doctor, that she already had new sheets, and she would come to the nurses station and ask for all these things again and again.

I'm telling you about Kim because she died of internal bleeding last week and was found in a tub. I'm telling you about her because I went to her funeral today and there were only the six of us there, and none of us had really known her for more than a month.

Did she live a full life? Was she even given a chance at life?
